Test Mode

  1. Verify "CHECK ENGINE" light circuit is operational. Ensure battery voltage is above 11 volts and charging system is okay. Engine must be at normal operating temperature.
  2. Transmission/transaxle must be in Neutral or Park. Air conditioner and other accessories must be off. Throttle valve must be closed (throttle position idle contacts closed).
  3. To enter test mode, place jumper wire across terminals "TE2" and "E1" of TDCL. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position. Test mode will NOT start if jumper wire is installed AFTER key is turned on. Test mode is operational if "CHECK ENGINE" light flashes with key on and engine off.
  4. Start engine. Drive vehicle at speed greater than 10 MPH (ECU will set code 42 and 43 if vehicle is not driven). Try to simulate the driveability complaint. Stop vehicle, but DO NOT turn engine off.
  5. Using a jumper wire, connect TDCL terminals TE1 and E1. Read any diagnostic codes that are stored. To read codes, see steps 4) through 7) or NORMAL MODE. Remove jumper wires.
