Ignition Lock Cylinder Coding Procedure

    IMPORTANT: The ignition lock cylinder replacement kit is not coded. Code the ignition lock cylinder in order to match the ignition lock cylinder to the key and transmitter assembly.
  1. Order the ignition lock cylinder replacement kit from the service parts system.
  2. Install the large black spring to the barrel tip that engages the ignition switch.
    3. IMPORTANT: The ignition lock cylinder tumblers and the tumbler springs are not self-retaining. Hold the tumblers and the springs in the barrel during installation.
  3. Hold the barrel with the slot for tumbler position 1 upward.
  4. Complete the following steps for each tumbler in positions 1,3,5, 7, and 9:
    1. Install the tumbler spring into the round recess of the slot.
    2. Select the tumbler that matches the depth of the cut on the metal key.
    3. Install the tumbler with the beak shaped side on the spring.
    4. Confirm the tumbler matches the key. Hold the tumbler in the barrel and insert the key. If the top and the bottom edges of the tumbler are flush with the surface of the barrel, then the tumbler matches the key.
    5. Hold the tumbler in the barrel and remove the key.
    6. Slowly release the tumbler. The spring pushes the tumbler up approximately 3 mm (0.1 in).
  5. Hold the tumblers for the positions 1,3,5,7, and 9 in the barrel.
  6. Hold the barrel with the slot for tumbler position 2 upward.
  7. Complete the following steps for each tumbler in positions 2,4,6,8, and 10:
    1. Install the tumbler spring into the round recess of the slot.
    2. Select the tumbler that matches the depth of the cut on the metal key.
    3. Install the tumbler with the beak shaped side on the spring.
    4. Confirm the tumbler matches the key. Hold the tumbler in the barrel and insert the key. If the top and the bottom edges of the tumbler are flush with the surface of the barrel, then the tumbler matches the key.
    5. Hold the tumbler in the barrel and remove the key.
    6. Slowly release the tumbler. The spring pushes the tumbler up approximately 3 mm (0.1 in).
  8. Hold the 10 tumblers in the barrel and insert the key. Ensure the 10 tumblers are flush with the surface of the barrel. Leave the key in the barrel in order to retain the tumblers and the tumbler springs in the barrel.
    9. IMPORTANT: The barrel lock plunger and the small copper spring are not self-retaining. Hold the plunger and the spring in the barrel during installation.
  9. Install the small copper spring to the barrel. Position the spring on the shallow side of the rectangular slot near the key insertion end of the barrel.
  10. Install the barrel lock plunger to the barrel. Position the plunger with the beak shaped side on the spring.
  11. Align the tumblers with the grooves in the lock housing.
  12. Hold the plunger and the spring in the barrel and install the barrel to the housing. Rotate the barrel in the housing in order to position the plunger in the slot in the housing.
    13. IMPORTANT: The long locking plunger and the large copper spring are not self-retaining. Hold the plunger and the spring in the barrel during installation.
  13. Install the large copper spring to the round hole in the barrel.
  14. Install the long locking plunger to the round hole in the barrel.
  15. Hold the plunger and the spring in the barrel. Rotate the barrel in the housing in order to engage the plunger in the housing.
  16. Install the small black spring to the small post on the side of the housing.
  17. Install the lever to the small black spring. Insert the tip of the lever into the rectangular hole in the side of the housing. Align the pivot point of the lever with the hole for the roll pin.
  18. Install the roll pin to the housing. Ensure the roll pin engages the pivot point of the lever.
  19. Verify the barrel rotates freely in the housing to the limits allowed by the long locking plunger within the housing.
  20. Rotate the key and the barrel in the housing fully clockwise. Verify the key is retained in the barrel. Verify the barrel is retained in the housing.
  21. Rotate the key and the barrel in the housing fully counterclockwise.
  22. Remove the key.
  23. Verify the barrel is retained in the housing.
  24. Remove the OLD ignition lock cylinder and install the NEW ignition lock cylinder. Refer to Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
