ATTACHMENT I DEALER INFORMATION
Mazda Motor Corporation has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists on certain 2001-2003 Mazda Tribute vehicles equipped with 3.0-liter V6 engines produced from April 17, 2000 through September 11, 2002. Affected vehicles may exhibit an intermittent engine quit and restart condition due to calibration errors within the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) hardware. This condition is most likely to occur while decelerating under 40 miles per hour, and could result in the vehicle being involved in a crash without warning.
Dealers will reflash the PCM using WDS B30.7 or later software. Be sure that your WDS is updated to the latest calibration level. This must be done on all affected vehicles in your inventory prior to delivery as well as vehicles that have been delivered to customers. Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by first class mail beginning May 3, 2004.

Dealer Report
The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act prohibits delivery of any subject vehicles without performing the necessary repair for defects or failures. Failure to perform applicable recalls before delivery can result in extensive dealer fines and penalties from the Federal Government. Therefore, you must complete this recall for all affected new vehicles in your inventory prior to sale or lease.
To help you effectively perform this recall, Mazda has developed the following resources:
- Service and Parts recall instructions (Attachment I) were e-mailed to your Service Department, are available on the ESI website, on M-Store under Bulletins, Forms & E-Documents, and are also available on eMDCS using Campaign Inquiry or the Warranty Vehicle Inquiry Detail screen by clicking on the recall number.
- Inspection and repair procedures (Attachment II) are available on the ESI website, on M-Store under Bulletins, Forms & E-Documents, and are also available on eMDCS using Campaign Inquiry or the Warranty Vehicle Inquiry Detail screen by clicking on the recall number.
- We recommend using the enclosed report of registered owners in the dealer's area to encourage customers to come in for the recall (creating recall reminder postcards, for example). Dealers may only use such owner information for the sole purpose of conducting and performing this safety recall, and for no other purpose. Using this information for any marketing activities is strictly prohibited by law and could subject your dealership to serious fines.
The information in this report is protected by state privacy and other applicable laws regarding disclosure of personal and/or confidential, restricted or blocked information. It is the dealer's responsibility to protect the confidentiality of owner records and prevent the release of information to other parties.
In California, privacy laws prevent the release of names and addresses on this report.
- For technical assistance, call the Technical Assistance Hotline.
- For warranty questions, contact the Corporate Dealer Assistance Group.
Please make certain that the appropriate personnel in your dealership are aware of these resources and are familiar with the details of this recall before responding to customer inquiries.
We apologize for any inconvenience that this recall may cause you and your customers. Please keep in mind that owners of 2001 and newer models are eligible to receive a rental car at no charge. Your understanding and support in carrying out this campaign is greatly appreciated.

B. PCM CALIBRATION LEVEL INSPECTION PROCEDURE
- Using WDS B30.7 or later software, proceed to "Module Reprogramming" to check PCM calibration level.
- If WDS indicates the PCM is already at the latest calibration level (refer to CALIBRATION INFORMATION table below), install an "Authorized Modification" label (9999-95-AMDC-97) next to the Emission Control sticker on the hood. This label will inform technicians of the PCM calibration change if future repairs are necessary.
Proceed to "D. CAMPAIGN LABEL INSTALLATION " and return the vehicle to the customer or inventory.
- If WDS indicates that a later calibration is available, proceed to "C. REPAIR PROCEDURE ".
C. REPAIR PROCEDURE
In Service Bulletin 01-014/02R, issued 12/16/02, the intermittent engine quit and restart condition was addressed by performing a number of part replacements.
The service procedure in SB 01-014/02R is cancelled and no longer necessary. The intermittent engine quit and restart condition can be resolved by recalibrating the PCM.
- Using WDS B30.7 or later software, reprogram the PCM to the latest calibration (refer to "CALIBRATION INFORMATION " table) by following the "Module Reprogramming" procedure.IMPORTANT: On certain 2001 Tribute vehicles, during the PCM reprogramming procedure with WDS, you will see a screen that asks:
Has the following TSB been performed:
02-01-01 - DRIVEABILITY - HESITATION ON ACCELERATION WHEN COLD. VEHICLES PRODUCED BEFORE 3/5/2001 EQUIPPED WITH 3.0L DURATEC ENGINE ONLY.
YES NO - Please look at the white label on the gray electrical connector of the PCM in your vehicle:
- If the tear tag label on the PCM is JYB0, JYB1, JYB2, or JYB3, select NO.
- If the tear tag label is anything other than mentioned above, select YES.
NOTE:- Always update the WDS PTU first, then install the needed calibration file that WDS shows during PCM reprogramming. Go to "WDS Calibration" on ESI and download the "update" file. If the PTU is not updated to the latest WDS calibration level, the calibration file will not install into the PTU.
- WDS shows the calibration part numbers after programming the PCM.
- Please be aware that PCM calibration part numbers and file names listed in any Service Bulletin may change due to future releases of WDS software, and additional revisions made to those calibrations for service related concerns.
- When reprogramming a PCM, WDS will always display the "latest" calibration P/N available for that vehicle. If any calibration has been revised/updated to contain new information for a new service concern/issue, it will also contain all previously released calibrations.
- When performing this procedure, if the WDS PTU is not docked and connected to 115V-120V, we recommend that a battery charger be installed on the vehicle battery and turned ON to a maximum charge of no more than 20 AMPS to keep the vehicle battery up to capacity. If you exceed 20 AMPS, it will damage the WDS PTU.
- Install an "Authorized Modification" label (P/N 9999-95-AMDC-97) with the new calibration information next to the Emission Control sticker on the hood. The "Authorized Modification" label will inform technicians of the PCM calibration change if future repairs are necessary.
- Verify repair. Start engine and make sure that the MIL and any other abnormal warning lights are not illuminated.
