Ignition Timing

NOTE: Ignition timing is not adjustable. For inspecting ignition timing, warm engine to normal operating temperature. Turn off all accessories. Place transmission in Neutral (M/T) or Park (A/T). Start engine and ensure idle speed is correct. See IDLE SPEED  under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE. Connect Inductive Timing Light (49-T018-002) lead to ignition timing checking harness (Black/White wire) located next to engine compartment fuse/relay box. See Fig 1 .

NOTE: Standard inductive timing light may not work on ignition timing checking harness. Recommend using manufacturers Inductive Timing Light (49-T018-002) or equivalent
  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool (49-B019-9A0) to Data Link Connector 1 (DLC). Set SYSTEM SELECT to position 1 and TEST SWITCH to SELF-TEST, or connect jumper wire between DLC 1 terminals TEN and GND. See Fig 2 .
  2. If ignition timing is not within specifications, see appropriate articles:

Disconnect diagnostic tester or jumper wire from DLC 1.

IGNITION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS (Degrees BTDC @ RPM)

Application M/T (1) A/T
Millenia 2.3L (2) N/A 7 @ 650
(1) Place automatic transmission in Park.
(2) Connect jumper wire between terminals TEN and GRD of data link connector.
