Spectra Hard Start 

This bulletin provides information related to cold engine hard start. Some 2002 and 2003 Spectra models built before 2/4/03 may experience hard starting when the engine is cold. The condition usually occurs in ambient temperatures over 80°F. Once started, engine runs normally. To reduce incidence of cold engine hard start complaints, the ECM logic was revised from 2/4/03 production.

For 2002 and 2003 Spectra complaint vehicles produced before 2/4/03, reprogramming software has been made available for the Hi-Scan Pro for use as a field fix.

Use the procedure on the following pages to reprogram the ECM.

REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE

1. Connect OBDII cable to the Hi-Scan Pro.

2. Remove the program card from the upper slot on the Hi-Scan Pro and insert the reprogramming card.

3. Connect the Hi-Scan Pro to the OBDII connector located under the dash on the driver side.
   NOTE: Any interruptions will prevent proper reprogramming. Make sure connectors are securely and completely inserted. Leave ignition key in the on position during reprogramming.

4. Turn ignition key to the "on" position.
5. Turn Hi-Scan Pro on, select "09 SPECTRA 1.8D START ABILITY" and press the "ENTER" key.

6. Select "01 SPECTRA 02/03MY [AUTO MODE]" and press the "ENTER" key.

7. At the prompt, enter your password "0525" and press the "ENTER" key.

   Reprogramming will proceed automatically as shown.

   NOTE: Some 02MY vehicles have ROM ID F2D8NS0C and may give an error message "ECM is a different type". These ECMs will need to be reprogrammed in error mode as P/N 0K2NA 18 881. Password 8881.
8. When "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, turn ignition key to the "OFF" position and disconnect Hi-Scan Pro from the vehicle. Wait at least 20 seconds, start vehicle and verify normal operation.
   NOTE: If the reprogramming did NOT complete properly or was interrupted, repeat the process using the following procedure.

9. Turn ignition key to the "ON" position.
10. Turn Hi-Scan Pro on, select "09 SPECTRA 1.8D START ABILITY" and press the "ENTER" key.

11. Select "02 SPECTRA 02/03MY [ERROR MODE]" and press the "ENTER" key.

12. Select model year/ECM part number from the list and press the "ENTER" key.

13. At the prompt, enter your password from the table below and press the "ENTER" key.

    Reprogramming will proceed as shown.

14. When "REPROGRAMMING COMPLETED" message is displayed, turn ignition key to the "OFF" position and disconnect Hi-Scan Pro from the vehicle. Wait at least 20 seconds, start vehicle and verify normal operation.
