Steering Column: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air bag and steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD  . Tilt steering column fully upward. Remove ignition lock cover securing screw, and remove cover. Remove left cover securing screw, and remove cover. Remove lower cowl securing screws, and remove cowl.
  2. Remove upper cowl securing screws. Fully lower column, and remove upper cowl. Turn fastener securing driver-side dash panel 90 degrees to release panel. See Fig 1 . Pull top of dash liner down and retrieve fastener. Remove nut, and release "P" clip securing bottom of liner. Unclip liner from rail, and remove it from vehicle. Remove driver-side footwell carpet.

  3. Remove throttle cable retaining cotter pin, and remove retaining pin. Disconnect throttle cable. Remove pedal pivot circlips, and remove pivot. Remove throttle pedal assembly. Remove throttle pedal mounting plate. Remove nut and bolt securing steering column to knuckle joint. See Fig 2 .
  4. Disconnect 2 upper column multiplugs. Remove upper column securing nuts, and remove column and spacers.
  5. Remove switch pack securing screws. Cut and remove harness retaining tie-wrap. Remove switch pack and backing plate.
