Transmission Verification Test

NOTE: If Transmission Control Module (TCM) or torque converter was replaced, or transmission has been repaired or replaced, reprogram pinion factor and perform shift quality quick learn procedure. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
NOTE: If the PCM, torque converter or the transmission has been replaced and or the transmission repaired, it is necessary to perform the DRBIII(R) Scan Tool Quick Learn Procedure and reset the "Pinion Factor".
NOTE: After completion of the Transmission Verification Test, the Powertrain Verification Test must be performed. See VERIFICATION TESTS  .
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Inspect vehicle to ensure that all engine components are properly installed and connected. Reassemble or reconnect components as necessary.
  2. With the DRBIII(R) scan tool, erase all Transmission and PCM DTC's.
  3. If after completing repairs for DTC P0706 CHECK SHIFTER SIGNAL perform PRNDL FAULT CLEARING PROCEDURE. See DIAGNOSIS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. If not performing repairs for DTC P0706, go to next step.
  4. With the DRBIII(R) scan tool, display transmission temperature. Start engine and run until transmission temperature is more than 110°F (43°C). Check transmission fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.
  5. Road test the vehicle. With the DRBIII(R) scan tool, monitor the engine speed RPM. Make 15-20 upshifts, 1st gear to 2ed, 2ed gear to 3rd, 3rd gear to 4th. Perform these shifts from a standing start to 45 MPH with a constant throttle opening of 20-25 degrees.
  6. While driving at less than 25 MPH, make 5-8 wide open throttle kick downs to , allowing 5 seconds in 2nd and 3rd gears between each kickdown.
  7. For a specific DTC, drive the vehicle to the Symptom's When Monitored/When Set conditions to verify the DTC was repaired.
  8. If equipped with AutoStick(R), upshift and downshift several times using the AutoStick(R) feature during the road test.
  9. Use the EATX OBDII task manager to run Good Trip time in each gear, this will confirm the repair and to ensure that the DTC has not re-matured.
  10. Check for DTCs during the road test. If a DTC sets during the road test. If a DTC sets, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
  11. Erase DTC P0700 in the powertrain control module after making transmission repairs. This will turn the MIL off.
  12. If all DTCs have been repaired, the test is complete. If any DTCs have not been repaired, perform appropriate diagnostic procedure. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
