Ignition System - 1.7L & 2.0L: Description

The solid state ignition system consists of a distributor, ignition coil, crankshaft position sensor, and an ignition power module. The ignition coil, mounted on the ignition power module, may be replaced separately if defective. Ignition power module operation and timing advance curve are controlled by the Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The ECU is a microprocessor which governs fuel injection, emission, and ignition functions for the vehicle. For more information on ECU operation and testing, see appropriate article in COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROL section in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE category.
