PROBABLE CAUSES

Up to VIN 19UYA22. . . VL004392 

Replace the seat base assembly if an updated control unit has not been installed already or replace the seat base subassembly if an updated control unit has been installed (see REPAIR PROCEDURE A  ).

From VIN 19UYA22. . . VL004393 thru VIN 19UYA22. . . WL006011 

Check for loose or damaged connectors or replace the seat base subassembly (perform REPAIR PROCEDURE B  ).

Driver's Seat Base Subassembly (excludes control unit and recline motor):

REPAIR PROCEDURE A

Up to VIN 19UYA22. . . VL004392 

  1. Remove the seat track end covers, and remove the four bolts securing the driver's seat.
  2. Tilt back the seat, inspect the white label on the bottom side of the control unit, and record the version number of the control unit (9.0x).

  3. Remove the seat from the vehicle, and set it on a cloth-covered bench.
  4. Remove the seat base assembly referring to pages 20-3 and 20-7 of the 1997-98 3.0CL Service Manual.
  5. Depending on the control unit version number recorded in step 2, determine if an updated control unit has been installed already. Reassemble the seat with the appropriate seat base.
    • If equipped with version 9.06, install a new seat base assembly (includes new control unit and recline motor).
    • If equipped with version 9.08, install a new seat base subassembly (reuse the original control unit and recline motor).
  6. Set the seat in the vehicle, and reconnect the connectors.
  7. Reinstall the seat, and torque the seat mounting bolts to 34 N m (25 lb-ft). Reinstall the seat track end covers.
  8. Move the seat to the end of its travel in both forward and reverse directions to set the new control unit.
  9. Position the seat in the middle of its travel. Lift the seat-back release lever, and make sure the seat moves forward. Then make sure it moves back into its original position when you return the seat-back to the upright position.

REPAIR PROCEDURE B

From VIN 19UYA22 . . . VL004393 thru VIN 19UYA22. . . WL006011 

  1. Determine which group of symptoms the problem falls in.
    • If the problem falls in the first group of symptoms, go to step 3.
    • If the problem falls in the second group of symptoms, go to step 2.
  2. Perform the limit switch input test on page 23-48 of the 1997-98 3.0CL Service Manual, and check for loose or damaged wires and connectors.
    • If a problem is found, disregard this bulletin and follow normal troubleshooting procedures.
    • If no problems are found, continue to step 3.
  3. Remove the seat from the vehicle, and set it on a cloth-covered bench.
  4. Remove the seat base subassembly referring to pages 20-3 and 20-7 of the 1997-98 3.0CL Service Manual.
  5. Transfer the original control unit and recline motor to the new seat base, and reassemble the seat.
  6. Set the seat in the vehicle, and reconnect the connectors.
  7. Reinstall the seat, and torque the seat mounting bolts to 34 N m (25 lb-ft). Reinstall the seat track end covers.
  8. Move the seat to the end of its travel in both forward and reverse directions to set the new control unit.
  9. Position the seat in the middle of its travel. Lift the seat-back release lever, and make sure the seat moves forward. Then make sure it moves back into its original position when you return the seat-back to the upright position.
