Code 4-8: Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor

  1. Disconnect left rear wheel speed sensor 2-pin connector. Measure resistance between speed sensor connector terminals. If resistance is not 700-1100 ohms, replace speed sensor. If resistance is 700-1100 ohms, go to next step.
  2. Check continuity between Light Blue wire terminal of speed sensor connector and ground. If continuity exists, replace speed sensor. If continuity does not exist, disconnect ABS control unit 22-pin connector. Check continuity between Light Blue wire terminal of ABS control unit 22-pin connector and ground.
  3. If continuity exists, Light Blue wire between ABS control unit and speed sensor is shorted to ground. If continuity does not exist, check continuity between Gray wire terminal of ABS control unit 22-pin connector and ground.
  4. If continuity exists, Gray wire between ABS control unit and speed sensor is shorted to ground. If continuity does not exist, reconnect speed sensor 2-pin connector. Measure resistance between Light Blue wire and Gray wire terminals of ABS control unit 22-pin connector.
  5. If resistance is 700-1100 ohms, go to step 7). If resistance is not 700-1100 ohms, connect jumper wire between Light Blue wire terminal of ABS control unit 22-pin connector and ground. Disconnect left rear speed sensor 2-pin connector.
  6. Check continuity between speed sensor harness connector Light Blue wire terminal and ground. If continuity exists, repair open Gray wire between ABS control unit and speed sensor. If continuity does not exist, repair open Light Blue wire between ABS control unit and speed sensor.
  7. Check left rear speed sensor air gap and correct if necessary. See WHEEL SENSOR AIR GAP SPECIFICATIONS  table under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If gap is okay, go to next step.
  8. Connect ABS tester to inspection 6-pin connector. See Figure . Start engine. Turn mode selector on ABS tester to mode 2. Firmly depress and hold brake pedal down. Push START TEST switch.
  9. Have assistant manually rotate left rear wheel. If wheel cannot be rotated, replace modulator. If wheels can be rotated, problem is intermittent. Test drive vehicle. If symptom reappears, replace ABS control unit.
